Punishments
The court imposes a statutory sanction on the person who has been sentenced to punishment, such as a fine or imprisonment. An entry in the criminal record is normally only made of a crime that can lead to a suspended sentence or imprisonment.
A person whose life, health, freedom or privacy is being threatened by another person's behaviour, can file for a restraining order, against the harasser, with the police or a district court.
In an individual case the President may remit, either wholly or in part, a sentence or other criminal penalty imposed by a court. Enquiries concerning petitions for pardons should be addressed to the Ministry of Justice. People released from prison can obtain help from the authorities and non-governmental organisations.
