Legal aid and advocates
Citizens can hire the services of a counsellor to deal with a legal matter wholly or partly through public funding. Legal aid extends to all legal matters. In cases heard abroad, legal aid covers legal advice only. There are no legal aid services available to companies or organisations.
Under certain circumstances in criminal proceedings a defendant is guaranteed a publicly funded defence attorney, regardless of his or her financial standing. Victims of serious crimes of violence and sex crimes may be awarded publicly funded legal counsel, regardless of their income.
Legal aid in litigation cases is provided by public legal aid attorneys, solicitors and other lawyers, and in other cases by public legal aid attorneys. Public legal aid attorneys work for a state legal aid office. More help is available to enquirers from the legal aid guidance telephone service.
