Courts

In Finland, judicial power is exercised by independent courts. Their independence is guaranteed under the Constitution of Finland. Judges are appointed by the President of the Republic.

District courts deal with civil and criminal cases, and petitions. The decision of a lower court can generally be referred to a higher one. A decision by a district court can be appealed in a court of appeal. A decision of a court of appeal may in turn be appealed in the Supreme Court if the latter gives leave to appeal.
Administrative courts deal with appeals made against decisions by the authorities. A decision by an administrative court may be appealed in the Supreme Administrative Court.

Special courts include the Market Court, the Labour Court, the Insurance Court and the High Court of Impeachment.
