Rights of an EU citizen

Every citizen of Finland is also at the same time a citizen of the European Union, with rights to reside and have a say in matters in Europe. Some of the more fundamental rights include free mobility and residence in the area of a Member State, the right to vote, and the right to stand as a candidate in EU elections.

EU legislation also contains many other rights that apply to all citizens. These relate to employment, social security and health care. These are explained in more detail on the Europe Information website of the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the website of the European Commission. Both sites also offer a personal advice service.
