Personal data and names

The personal data of foreigners living in Finland is collected in the Population Information System. The basic information includes name, date of birth, nationality and address. The name of a newborn baby must be registered in the Population Information System within two months of the birth.

Personal data registration is carried out in the local registry office. The data is needed for taxation, health care and statistics, for example. Everyone has the right to check their personal data at the registry office or online with an electronic identification code.
