Laws and legislation

Legislation is enacted by an elected Parliament. Most bills are submitted to Parliament as Government proposals. Before the proposal is submitted, the bill is drafted by a ministry. Parliament either passes, rejects or amends the bill. Decisions are taken by simple majority, i.e. a proposal that gets most votes wins.

The Åland Islands are autonomous. Åland’s laws are passed by the Provincial Parliament under the Act on the Autonomy of Åland. With regard to other matters, the acts enacted by the Parliament of Finland are valid in Åland.
