Population information

Personal data on Finns and foreigners living in Finland on a more permanent basis is stored in the national population information system. The system is maintained by local register offices and the Population Register Centre.

The personal data stored in the population information system includes a person’s name, identification number, home municipality, address, nationality, mother tongue, family relations and details of birth and death. The guardians of a child must inform the local register office of the child's names and mother tongue within two months of the child's birth.

Official certificates and detailed extracts from the population register can be ordered from the local register offices, which also take care of name changes, investigations of impediments to marriage and confirmations of the list of parties to estate inventories. Local register offices are also responsible for guardianship issues, keeping certain registers, performing civil weddings and acting as notaries public.
