Intoxicants

Intoxicants often cause social problems, illnesses and addiction. Legal intoxicants such as tobacco and alcohol are responsible for the majority of these cases. Narcotic drugs are illegal intoxicants, and the use, possession and sale of these are punishable offences.

Local authorities are responsible for providing treatment for substance abuse. They often cooperate with organisations and parishes. The aim of substance abuse work is to prevent and reduce problems and provide actual treatment. Work is carried out in all population groups.

There are various forms of treatment because individuals and their situations are unique. Help is provided for substance abusers or their families. Support, treatment and rehabilitation are provided in the short or long term, as necessary. These vary from outpatient drug rehabilitation to various housing services and rehabilitation centres. Methods used include different forms of therapy, courses and medication.

Social and health care organisations produce research and statistical data on the use and sale of intoxicants. This information is used to target substance abuse treatment and to build up substance abuse policy.

Legislation, taxation, control of the retail trade and general supervision are all methods used to influence the overall use of intoxicants.
