Prenuptial agreement and assets

In a prenuptial agreement, the partners agree that if their marriage or registered partnership ends, their property will not be divided equally, but instead both will keep their own assets.

In the event of death, a partner inherits all the property of the deceased partner, unless a will states otherwise. Where there are children, the property is normally divided equally between the partner, who receives half, and the heirs. If the partners’ assets have been unequal in value, the wealthier partner left widowed may nevertheless keep all his or her property to him/herself.
