Marriage

Weddings are held either in church or in a civil ceremony. Before the marriage, an investigation of impediments to marriage is carried out, in which the local register office checks that the union is legal and permissible. The engaged couple jointly makes an investigation request either at the register office or at the parish where one of the partners is a member. People can get married at the age of 18 if they are not married or in a registered partnership. Marriage between close relatives is not permitted.

People who are members of a church can usually get married in their own church. The right to officiate at marriages is held by, for example, the Evangelical Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic churches along with registered religious communities that have been granted the same right. Civil marriages are performed in register offices. Two witnesses must be present at both church and civil weddings.
