Living together

The form of a relationship has an impact on the administration of assets, the right to inherit, the guardianship of children and maintenance. For example, partners in a marriage are obliged to provide for each other, unlike cohabiting couples. Couples can marry either in church or in a civil ceremony.

Same-sex couples can register their partnership at register offices. Couples living in a registered partnership are primarily subject to the same legislation as married couples.

Stepfamilies are families with the children from one or both parents’ former partnership and possibly with children of their own.

A divorce may be granted by the courts after a six-month period of consideration. The court does not examine the reasons that led to the divorce. Couples can either file for divorce together or one of the partners can file on their own.
