Cohabitation

Unlike in marriage, cohabiting partners do not have any specific rights or duties to each other. However, in some legislation, cohabitation between a man and a woman is treated as equal to marriage.

An agreement on the dividing of assets or a will can be made in case of the cohabitation breaking up. A child will always inherit his or her parents, regardless of whether they were married at the time of the child's birth or not. The mother will be the sole guardian of a child born in cohabitation, unless a voluntary agreement between the parents or a court ruling decides otherwise.
