Parental allowances and child benefits

Expectant mothers and mothers who have given birth receive maternity allowance, which is usually determined on the basis of the mother's earnings. Fathers can apply for paternity allowance after the child has been born. After the period of maternity allowance has come to an end, one of the parents can apply for parental allowance. The parental allowance period ends when the child is about nine months old. Parents apply for the allowances from KELA. Family allowance is paid monthly for children living in Finland.
