Having children

The arrival of children changes the nature of the family and relationship. Expectant mothers and families receive advice and support from maternity and child welfare clinics. These clinics operate within health centres and can refer expectant mothers for tests and treatment if necessary. Before starting school, small children attend a child welfare clinic regularly for physical examinations and vaccinations.

Infertility can nowadays be treated in many ways. In addition to treatment, there are also discussion and support services for infertile couples. Children can also be adopted. Adoptions are arranged by local authorities and organisations with a permit from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Termination of a pregnancy requires either a referral from a doctor or permission from the National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs. The majority of abortions are carried out because of unwanted pregnancies.

The paternity of a child born outside wedlock is confirmed at a register office. The paternity of a child born in wedlock does not need to be confirmed.
