Religions and philosophies of life in Finland

Religious communities may decide whom to accept as their members. People are free to leave any community by notifying of this in writing to the community concerned or the local register office. A person aged 15 or older may join or leave a religious community with his/her parents’ permission. The guardians of a person aged 12 or older may bring him/her into a religious community or have him/her leave it only with the child’s consent.

The Register of Religious Associations is kept by the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland, and these associations are governed by the Association Act. Data on adherence to religious communities is kept on file by the Population Register Centre.
