Antiquities and old buildings

Antiquities recall past generations in the form of relics on land or in water. Antiquities divide into those from prehistoric times, before any information was written down, and those from the 13th – 20th century. All antiquities are protected under the Antiquities Act.

The culturally and historically valuable architectural heritage is protected under special laws and planning legislation. Information on local conservation sites is available from the municipal planning authorities and the National Board of Antiquities. The latter body as well as the environmental administration, the Finnish Local Heritage Federation and Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment grant financial assistance for repairs and renovations to old buildings.
