Honorary titles and decorations

The Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Order of the Lion of Finland are the two official orders of merit in Finland, and there are also many other kinds of official and semi-official medals and decorations.

The President of the Republic is the Grand Master of the orders of merit. The President decides who are to be awarded decorations, which are handed out every year on Finnish Independence Day. Each year, the President also confers honorary titles on citizens as a token of recognition. People may be nominated for an honorary title by private individuals, organisations or both.
