Honorary titles and decorations
The two official orders of merit in Finland are the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Order of the Lion of Finland. There are also other official or semi-official medals and decorations.
The President of the Republic is the Grand Master of the orders of merit. The President decides who are to be awarded decorations, which are handed out every year on Finnish Independence Day. The President also confers honorary titles as tokens of recognition. People may be nominated for an honorary title by private individuals, organisations or both.
