About the RSS service and Suomi.fi portlets

Suomi.fi offers RSS feeds of public sector news, the latest links, e-services and forms in the Suomi.fi portal. Subscribe to the feeds by using the links below or by clicking the RSS icon on the address bar.

What is RSS?

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. It is an information publishing method where a user requests material from a site providing an RSS feed. Technically, RSS is a subset of the XML page description language.

Subscribing to an RSS feed

The current versions of the commonly used web browsers (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2 or 3, Opera 9.x) allow the user to subscribe to an RSS feed simply by clicking a subscription button. The button is usually either a white and orange RSS icon or an orange rectangle with white letters RSS.

Each RSS feed has its own subscription button. The button may be located in the content area of a web page, or in the address bar of the browser. In some cases a text link is used instead of a button, but the functionality is the same in both cases.

The simple subscription method described above may not work with older browsers. In such cases the user will need a separate RSS reader software (for example, RssReader, FeedReader or SharpReader) that can be downloaded for free.

The subscription button to the Suomi.fi RSS feed can be found in the browser's address on the portal's home page, the first page of the Newsroom section and on this page.

For more information on RSS and its features, just use "RSS" as a search term on any major search engine.

Suomi.fi portlets

Suomi.fi content can easily be utilised on other websites with the help of portlets. A portlet is a described area on a web page that displays the content retrieved from another web place. Suomi.fi portlets display the desired content from Suomi.fi portal and they are automatically updated always when new content is added to Suomi.fi.

Suomi.fi content can be imported into other websites with three different types of portlets. The portlets can be ordered by using a simple online order form on which the desired portal content and the preferred layout can be chosen. The code for installation and more specific information are sent to the orderer by email.

You can choose from three different types of portlets:

  • a portlet with contents from Suomi.fi service topics
  • a portlet with the local municipalities` forms
  • a portlet with public sector news and Suomi.fi bulletins

A portlet can be ordered with contents in Finnish, Swedish or English. More information on the different portlets and order forms can be found on the Finnish version of Suomi.fi`s Workspace pages: Työhuone: Suomi.fin sisällön hyödyntäminen
