Logging in with a certificate card
A certificate card is a card with an embedded chip containing a Citizen Certificate issued by the Population Register Centre. A Citizen Certificate is an electronic identity that includes a person's first name, last name and e-transaction ID, among other things. At the moment, the Citizen Certificate is in use in electronic ID cards issued by the police.
If you want to use a certificate card for logging in, you need to have a card reader and software. The card reader program is available free of charge if you have a certificate card and can be downloaded at the FINEID.fi website of the Population Register Centre. You will find the link at the bottom of the page.
Card reader software from the Population Register Centre
The Population Register Centre released a new card reader software application in June 2008 (mPollux Digisign Client). It can be downloaded for free at the FINEID website of the Population Register Centre at www.fineid.fi.
The new software replaces the SetWeb card reader software used by those who have previously used a Citizen Certificate or Organisation Certificate issued by the Population Register Centre. To use a digital signature on a certificate card, you must update the SetWeb software to the mPollux software.
How to log in using a certificate card
- Place the card in the reader (the right way up) and wait for the program to read the card data. Leave the card in the reader while you are using the service.
- When you have placed the card in the reader, click the button or link for the identification on the login page. Choose the certificate with your name. The program will then ask you for your PIN code (PIN 1). This will have been delivered to you with your certificate card.
- If you get an error message when using a certificate card, this is probably due to the connection between the card reader program and your browser being broken. Close all browser windows and restart the browser.
- When you stop using the service, log out and remove the card from the reader. Remember to keep the PIN codes somewhere separate from the card.
